Finding the perfect location is only the beginning. Turning it into a film-ready environment, anywhere in the world, requires experience, research, local knowledge, and meticulous production management. For me, as the founder of World Production Fixer, this is where the real work begins.
A tropical beach, a remote island, a secluded jungle, a traditional fishing village or a spectacular coastal landscape can provide the perfect setting for an international film production. But what looks extraordinary on screen can present a very different reality behind the camera. Can a crew reach the location? Is there sufficient space for equipment? Where will the production base be established? What permits are required, and how will the sun, weather, transport and local infrastructure affect the shooting schedule?
These are the questions that drive my work , as an international location scout and production specialist operating under the name World Production Fixer. Specialising in international and tropical filming locations, I combine creative location research with practical production planning, local coordination and on-the-ground management.
My approach is built around a simple principle: a great film location must work both in front of the camera and behind it.

Beyond the Picture-Perfect Location
Every successful location search begins with a detailed understanding of the production's creative ambitions and practical requirements. Rather than simply presenting attractive places, I conduct intensive location research based on the script, the director's vision, the production company's specifications, the available budget and the logistical realities of the project.
The objective is to identify locations that deliver the desired visual impact while remaining realistic and workable for the production.
Tropical environments require particular attention. Sun orientation, the movement of shadows, changing weather conditions, seasonal accessibility and the distance between locations can all influence how efficiently a scene can be filmed. A seemingly perfect beach may be unsuitable because of tidal conditions, restricted access or a lack of space for technical equipment. A remote jungle location may offer extraordinary visuals but require substantial planning for transport, power, catering and crew facilities.
Understanding these details early can save a production considerable time, money and unnecessary complications later.

The Location Book:
Turning Research into a Production Tool
One of the central elements of my work is the creation of a comprehensive location book tailored to the individual production. This is much more than a collection of videos and photographs. It is a structured research document designed to help producers, directors and production designers evaluate potential locations and make informed decisions.
Each candidate location is documented with relevant specifications, including its geographical position, precise coordinates, sun orientation, accessibility, surrounding environment and practical filming conditions. The research also considers the availability of production facilities, equipment access, potential crew requirements and the logistical arrangements needed to support filming on site.
Where relevant, the assessment extends to parking, accommodation, transport routes, catering possibilities, technical access and the feasibility of establishing a production base nearby.
By bringing creative and operational information together in one document, the location book gives the production team a clearer picture of what each location can offer, what it will take to film there and where potential challenges may arise. The result is a more informed decision-making process, allowing producers to compare locations not only on their visual qualities but also on their suitability, feasibility and overall production costs.

Local Knowledge Makes the Difference
Once a location has been selected, the work moves into a more detailed phase of research and preparation.
I used to work closely with a professional, experienced local fixer who understands the region, its filming regulations, local suppliers and the realities of working on the ground. This partnership is particularly important when operating internationally, where administrative procedures, working practices, infrastructure and production resources can vary considerably from one country to another.
Together, we investigate the practical possibilities of filming at the selected locations. This includes determining which permits and authorisations are required, checking the availability of local crew and equipment, identifying suitable suppliers and assessing any restrictions that could affect the production.
At the same time, preliminary cost estimates are developed. The aim is to establish a realistic understanding of the financial implications before the production commits to its final arrangements. For me, this early coordination is essential. Discovering a logistical obstacle during pre-production is usually manageable; discovering it on the morning of a scheduled shoot can be considerably more expensive.

From Pre-Production to a Film-Ready Operation
As the shooting dates approach, the focus shifts from research and feasibility to the detailed organisation of the production.
Accommodation, transportation, crew movements, equipment logistics and location access must all be coordinated. Distances between hotels, production bases and filming locations are assessed, schedules are aligned, and the necessary local arrangements are put in place.
In tropical destinations, these preparations can be particularly demanding.
A remote location may require boats, specialised vehicles or alternative transport arrangements. Weather conditions may affect travel times, while limited local infrastructure can make advance planning essential.
The challenge is to anticipate as many variables as possible and establish practical alternatives before they become urgent problems.
This is where the combination of location scouting and production management becomes especially valuable.
Because I have already investigated the locations in detail, I can approach the logistical planning with a thorough understanding of the environment, the available resources and the production's specific requirements. The result is a more integrated preparation process, in which location decisions and logistical considerations are developed together rather than treated as separate tasks.

On Set: Where Planning Meets Reality
During the shooting period, I am generally on the ground as location manager and frequently takes on local production management responsibilities as well.
Working with the support of the local fixer and my assistant(s), I concentrates on the daily operation of the production, ensuring that locations are accessible and ready, logistics remain coordinated, and the agreed budget is monitored.
Every shooting day brings its own demands. Crew and equipment must arrive at the right place at the right time. Access arrangements need to be maintained, local suppliers coordinated and unexpected issues resolved without unnecessarily disrupting the schedule. In tropical environments, changing weather, difficult terrain, limited infrastructure and long travel distances can add further complexity.
The role therefore requires a combination of forward planning, practical problem-solving, clear communication and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure. My objective is to create the conditions in which directors and creative departments can concentrate on making the film, while the operational side of the production continues to function as efficiently as possible.
Budget awareness remains central throughout. Decisions made on location can have immediate financial consequences, and close coordination between the location team, local fixer and production management helps keep both logistics and expenditure under control.

A Global Approach with Local Expertise
International production work is rarely successful through remote research alone. Local relationships, reliable contacts and an understanding of how things actually operate in a particular region are indispensable.
World Production Fixer combines international location research and production coordination with the knowledge and experience of trusted local professionals. This approach allows each project to benefit from a broader international perspective while retaining the essential local expertise needed to operate effectively.
Although tropical locations are a particular specialisation, the underlying approach remains the same wherever a production takes place: understand the script, research the possibilities, evaluate the practical requirements, establish realistic costs and prepare the operation thoroughly.
The objective is not simply to find a beautiful place to film. It is to find the right place for the story and develop a workable plan to bring that story to the screen.

Working as an international film production fixer is one of those behind-the-scenes jobs that quietly makes global filmmaking possible. When a production shoots abroad, the fixer becomes the bridge between the creative vision of the film team and the practical reality of filming in a foreign country.
A large part of the job happens from behind a desk. This is where planning begins: researching locations, comparing logistics, coordinating schedules, and building a network of reliable local contacts. Fixers spend a lot of time communicating with local location scouts, equipment rental companies, transport providers, and accommodation partners to make sure everything is in place before the crew even arrives.
But the job is far from purely administrative. Once a project moves into active pre-production, the fixer is often out in the field—visiting potential filming locations, joining local scouts, and assessing whether a place is truly suitable for the shoot. This includes checking practical details like access, lighting conditions, and noise levels, but also more everyday concerns like hotel quality for the cast and crew.
Another critical responsibility is dealing with permits and regulations. Every country—and often every region—has its own set of rules for filming. The fixer works closely with local authorities to secure permits, ensure compliance with regulations, and avoid last-minute legal or logistical problems that could delay production.
What makes this role both challenging and rewarding is the constant cultural navigation. Each country has its own working style, communication habits, and expectations. A successful fixer learns to adapt quickly, translate not just language but also working culture, and keep everyone aligned despite differences.
In the end, being an international film production fixer is about solving problems before they happen, often across borders and time zones. It’s a role that demands flexibility, patience, and curiosity—but it also offers the unique opportunity to help bring stories to life in some of the most diverse and fascinating places in the world.

In today’s global film and television industry, productions are increasingly crossing borders to capture authentic locations, unique cultures, and compelling stories. Whether you’re producing a documentary, television series, feature film, branded content, or news segment, having the right local production support can make the difference between a smooth shoot and a logistical nightmare.
