There’s a certain thrill in being an international working location scout: the person who finds the place—the one that transforms a script into something real, textured, and believable. As an international location scout, my work lives at the intersection of creativity and logistics. Every project starts the same way: with a conversation.
Clients come to me with a vision—sometimes precise, sometimes abstract. They might describe a feeling (“warm, nostalgic, late summer”), a visual (“wide open coastal road at golden hour”), or a practical need (“urban rooftop with clean sightlines and no sound restrictions”). My role is to translate that into a physical place, anywhere in the world.
From there, I begin building a profile of the ideal location. Atmosphere is always at the core: light quality, architectural language, textures, and how the environment supports the story. But aesthetics alone are never enough. I analyze sun position carefully—using tools like Sun Seeker—to understand how light will behave throughout the day and across the shooting schedule. A perfect location at noon can be completely wrong at 6pm.
Then come the invisible factors that can make or break a shoot: prevailing winds, ambient noise, accessibility, and parking logistics for crew and equipment. I look into permitting requirements early, because bureaucracy varies wildly from one country to another. What takes a day in one place might take weeks elsewhere.
One of my greatest assets is my local network. Over time, I’ve built relationships with fixers, producers, property owners, and local authorities across multiple regions. These connections allow me to go beyond obvious choices and unlock locations that aren’t publicly listed or easily accessible. Often, the best spots are the ones you only find through people, not platforms.
Once a location is approved, the process shifts from discovery to precision. The next step is the location recce, where the client joins on-site with the Director and Director of Photography. This is where the vision becomes tangible. We walk the space together, fine-tuning angles, confirming how light behaves in real conditions, and aligning on how each frame will come to life. These visits often lead to subtle but important adjustments—repositioning scenes, refining backgrounds, or even rethinking how the location is used to better serve the story. It’s a collaborative moment where creative intent and practical execution meet.
From there, the focus turns to making it all happen.
Permitting processes begin, tailored to the specific country and local regulations. At the same time, I work closely with my network to assemble the right local crew and coordinate with various departments—production, transport, equipment, and more.
It’s a layered operation, building momentum step by step, until everything is in place and ready. Then, finally, the transition happens: from planning to action, as the location transforms into a working film set. The job is equal parts research, intuition, and negotiation. It’s about seeing potential where others don’t, while staying grounded in the practical realities of production. When everything aligns—the light, the space, the logistics—you don’t just find a location. You create an opportunity for the story to come alive, anywhere in the world.
